Born in Staffordshire, I work in oils, watercolour and charcoal, but specialise in vitreous enamel painting fired on steel. I have been enamelling professionally since June 2013, but have over 25 years experience as a Premier Artist for Halcyon Days Enamels Ltd., producers of luxury Georgian inspired enamels, where I painted high quality miniatures for clients including Japanese and English royalty.
A Craftsman of The Guild of Enamellers and a member of The British Society of Enamellers, I work from my studio at home where I create artwork for exhibition and commission throughout the UK.
Each miniature is hand painted with professional vitreous enamel on-glaze paint onto a white vitreous enamel base coat. Every piece is created by many layers of paint being carefully fused onto steel by repeated firings in a small kiln at 800c, until a strong depth of colour, texture and gloss is achieved. This gradual process is risky, but allows me to experiment with technique and form to give richness and originality to each piece.
Mainly a sea and landscape painter, I apply vibrant colour to capture the feel and mood of skies, seas, rivers and occasionally the wildlife they contain. I am inspired by views that evoke warm memories, such as childhood holidays by the sea and walks in the woods, and love to invite the viewer to step in and enjoy.
